The Ultimate 4WD Gibb River Road Adventure, Self-Drive Package


The Gibb River Road is an exhilarating unsealed 4WD adventure through the heart of the Kimberley. It takes you from Derby to Kununurra on 660kms of natural beauty. The landscape of dramatic ranges, plunging waterfalls and striking gorges is what The Kimberley is all about. Still considered one of the last wilderness 4WD outback journeys, it is for everyone wishing to experience this region’s amazing terrain.

Day 1 – Broome to Mount Hart

Depart early and travel towards Fitzroy Crossing, along the Great Northern Highway, to the Gibb River Road turn-off. Spend time exploring amazing Tunnel Creek, a 750 metre tunnel which runs right through the Napier Range. Travel onto scenic Windjana Gorge for a spectacular walk through the gorge, then travel onto Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge.

Overnight: Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge – Homestead Room (Dinner & breakfast)

Day 2 – Mount Hart to Bell Gorge

Relax and spend the day exploring Bell Gorge, which is considered one of the most spectacular gorges and waterfall in the region. Then drive onto Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge.

Overnight: Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge – Tented Safari Cabin (Dinner & breakfast)

Day 3 – Bell Gorge to Mt Elizabeth Station

Travel to Mt Elizabeth Station, along the way explore the unique Galvan, Manning and Adcock Gorges. Experience the natural beauty of this unique environment.

Overnight Mt Elizabeth Station – Twin Share Room with shared facilities (Dinner & breakfast)                        

Day 4–Mt Elizabeth Station to Home Valley Station

Continue your drive along the Gibb River Road. Home Valley Station is a 615,000 acre heritage cattle station and tourism property. On arrival, enjoy a cold one at the iconic Dusty Bar & Grill!

Overnight: Home Valley Station – Guesthouse Room (Breakfast)

Day 5 – Home Valley Station

Enjoy all Home Valley has available. A great range of activities including fishing, horse riding and cattle mustering; or maybe a relaxing day by the pool!

Day 6 – Home Valley to El Questro

A short drive of about 50kms will take you to El Questro Wilderness Park. Spend today exploring the beautiful Emma Gorge. The walk to Emma Gorge is for the sure footed but definitely worth the effort once you are swimming in the stunning water hole.

Overnight: El Questro Station – Station Gardenview Room

Day 7 – El Questro

Go barramundi fishing, take a horse trek, cruise on the Chamberlain Gorge or visit Zebedee Springs; take in all El Questro Wilderness Park has to offer.

Overnight: El Questro Station – Station Gardenview Room

Day 8 – El Questro to Kununurra

Depart El Questro and travel on to Kununurra, which is 100kms further west. Enjoy the town of Kununurra where you may like to take a walk to Kelly’s Knob Lookout for a great view of the town and valley.

Overnight: Kununurra Country Club Resort – King Room

Day 9 Kununurra

Maybe join a guided tour of Lake Argyle and the Ord River – this includes a ground tour of the lake, a visit to the historic Durack Family Argyle Downs Homestead Museum, returning via a 55km boat cruise along the mighty Ord River to Kununurra.

Overnight: Kununurra Country Club Resort – King Room

Day 10 – Kununurra to Purnululu National Park

Back on the road again to travel to the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park. (250kms to the turn off then 53kms of unsealed road – 4WD access only.)  The Bungle Bungle Range is renowned for its striking sandstone domes, striped with orange and grey bands.

Overnight: Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge – Cabin (Dinner & breakfast)

Day 11 – Purnululu National Park

Explore Piccaninny Gorge, Cathedral Gorge, Echidna Chasm and more. Optional Helicopter flights are available over the Bungles giving you an amazing panoramic view into their sheer size.

Overnight: Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge – Cabin (Dinner & breakfast)

Day 12 – Purnululu National Park to Fitzroy Crossing

Take the unsealed road out of Purnululu before driving the 100kms of sealed highway to Halls Creek, the site of the first gold rush in Western Australia. Explore Old Halls Creek town site and China Wall, before completing the 290kms to Fitzroy Crossing, home of Geikie Gorge.

Overnight: Fitzroy River Lodge – Motel Room

Day 13 – Fitzroy Crossing to Broome

Today you complete your 350km journey back to Broome. Stop at Geikie Gorge National Park and take a 1 or 2 hour cruise on Geikie Gorge or walk one of the many trails. Journey back to Broome with time to reflect on all your wonderful 4WD holiday experiences.
