ITINERARY

17 Day Kimberley & Top End

A complete Australian outback experience, you’ll discover the Mitchell Plateau and Purnululu National Park before crossing into Kakadu National Park, where wildlife and stunning vistas await. You will also journey into Arnhem Land to enjoy the rich Indigenous culture. Visit the remarkable Tunnel Creek, wading through the cool waters to views the wonderful oasis. At Windjana Gorge, view the sheer cliffs above the white sands. Journey into Bell Gorge where stunning cliffs surrounds tiered waterholes. A full day at El Questro will allow you to discover the beautiful Zebedee Springs, the towering Emma Gorge and join a cruise down the Chamberlain Gorge.  Ascend the Mitchell Plateau and take a helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls. Stay two nights at Purnululu National Park, home to the fascinating Bungle Bungle Range. Join a gentle hike in Echidna Chasm, visit the natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Gorge, and walk along Piccaninny Creek, a winding gorge surrounded by the high walls of the Bungle Bungle domes.

Cross the border into the Northern Territory on the way to Nitmiluk National Park. Step aboard the unforgettable Nabilil Dreaming Sunset Cultural Cruise. Travel into Kakadu; board a guided cruise along Kakadu’s Yellow Water Billabong. Travel to Nourlangie Rock to view Aboriginal rock art. Accompanied by a local guide, cross the East Alligator River to visit Arnhem Land. Enjoy the art and billabongs of Cannon Hill and Hawk Dreaming. A final visit to Ubirr to explore galleries of rock art before travelling to Darwin.

Day 1. Broome

Arrive in Broome and be transferred to your hotel, the Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa. Enjoy your day at leisure to explore this fascinating place. Head to the Sunset Bar and Grill at your resort to see one of Australia’s best sunsets over Cable Beach. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner before your fascinating journey commences.

Day 2. Gibb River Road, Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek

 Journey on the Gibb River Road to Bandilngan Windjana Gorge National Park and discover Windjana Gorge, where sheer cliffs tower above glistening white sands. Admire the ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls and scour the banks for a glimpse of the freshwater crocodiles that laze on the shores of the Lennard River. Continue to Tunnel Creek, a 50-metre-long natural tunnel carved through the Napier Range, located in the Dimalurru Tunnel Creek National Park. With torch in hand, wade through the cool waters that fill the tunnel’s winding path underground and emerge on the other side to the sight of a stunning oasis. Travel into the Wilinggin King Leopold Range Conservation Park. Covering more than 900,000 acres and featuring seven rugged ranges. Arrive at the first of three APT lodges, Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge, which boasts an enviable position and a sprawling lawn to relax. Your tented cabin the perfect spot for you to enjoy the beauty of this ancient land from your private deck.

Day 3. Bell Gorge, Hiking and Swimming

Back on the Gibb River Road, travel to Bell Gorge, where stunning cliffs surround a series of tiered waterholes. Sitting approximately 300 metres above sea level, Bell Gorge is an idyllic natural spot for swimming and photography. Here you can also enjoy a spot of bird-watching. Should you be feeling particularly energetic, you may take the opportunity to hike to the lower pool of the gorge and enjoy a relaxing dip below the cascading waterfall.

Day 4. Galvans Gorge, Manning Gorge, Drysdale River Station

Travel through the heart of Kimberley cattle country to Galvans Gorge, where a short walk leads to a picturesque waterhole. Admire the rock art adorning the gorge walls or indulge in a leisurely swim. Continue to the beautiful Manning Gorge where you can spot local birdlife as you enjoy lunch in the shade of a gum tree.

Day 5. Mitchell Plateau, King Edward River, Bradshaw Art (Gwion Gwion)

Travel up the Kalumburu Road towards the isolated Mitchell Plateau. Ascending the Mitchell Plateau, explore the Wandjina and Gwion Gwion art galleries. The Kimberley’s rock art is arguably some of the world’s oldest, with evidence suggesting the earliest occupation in the region dates back 50,000 to 60,000 years ago. Swim in the clear waters of the King Edward River. For the next two nights, stay at our Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge located at the top of the plateau, which is perfect for wildlife watchers. In addition enjoy the facilities of the lodge’s new Ungolan Pavilion, where you can relax in the lounge, treat yourself to a drink or read up on the local culture. In the heart of the Mitchell Plateau, your accommodation is perfectly positioned beside the Pandanus palm-fringed Camp Creek, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip.

Day 6. Mitchell Falls, Helicopter Flight

Discover Mitchell Falls, a true highlight of your Kimberley adventure. Where possible, a local Indigenous guide will join you, providing a unique insight into the region. Begin with a hike to Little Mertens Falls to view rare Aboriginal art. Continue on to Big Mertens Falls before arriving at Mitchell Falls. Take a dip in the river before enjoying a helicopter flight over the spectacular Mitchell Falls back to the vehicle. Alternatively, hike back with your guide.

Day 7. Gibb River Road, El Questro Wilderness Park

Leaving the magnificent Mitchell Plateau, rejoin the Gibb River Road. Your adventure continues as you ford the Durack and Pentecost Rivers where saltwater crocodiles inhabit the deceptively calm waters. Travel to El Questro Wilderness Park, a one million-acre property of rugged wilderness in the heart of the Kimberley. Stay two nights immersed in nature at Emma Gorge Resort in El Questro and explore this spectacular primordial setting.

Day 8. El Questro Wilderness Park

Discover the amazing wonders of El Questro Wilderness Park today. With a local ranger, embark on a cruise along stunning Chamberlain Gorge, a fresh waterway fringed by tropical vegetation and rugged escarpments. After lunch, head to the beautiful Zebedee Springs, a permanent natural thermal spring tucked away in a secluded pocket of rainforest. Return to Emma Gorge and enjoy dinner later this evening.

Day 9. Purnululu National Park, Echidna Chasm

Journey deep into Purnululu National Park, a spectacular wilderness region that is home to some of the country’s most striking geological formations. Travel the Spring Creek Track and discover the magnitude of Purnululu for yourself. Hike to the awe-inspiring Echidna Chasm, a spectacular natural cleft in the rock. Narrow in width with walls reaching 100-metres high, Echidna Chasm is a must-see in the Kimberley. Continue on to APT’s award-winning Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, located in the heart of the serene Purnululu National Park.

Day 10. Piccaninny Creek, Cathedral Gorge

Explore the magic of World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park and discover the depth of the Bungle Bungle Range today. Walk along Piccaninny Creek as it winds through the high walls of the Bungle Bungle domes. Your next stop is the natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Gorge, a spacious cavern reaching skyward, where the acoustics are astounding. Marvel at the majestic beehive domes as your guide brings the natural history of the range to life. You may like to experience an optional scenic helicopter flight over the range (own expense). This evening, enjoy sunset drinks as the sun goes down on the Bungle Bungle massif.

Day 11. Ord River, Kununurra

Travel through rugged red landscapes to Kununurra, which is the gateway to the eastern Kimberley and the home of the Ord River Scheme, an engineering feat designed to prevent seasonal flooding and to store water for irrigating large areas subject to drought. Today, explore the beauty of Kununurra, before heading to the Kununurra Country Club Resort for dinner later this evening.

Day 12. Lake Argyle, Ord River Cruise

Travel to the majestic Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the Southern Hemisphere. Join a spectacular wildlife cruise on the mighty Ord River. From a modern shaded vessel, discover a fascinating ecological system that has developed from the damming of the Ord River at two locations to create an area rich in wildlife, flora and undeniable beauty. This evening, enjoy dinner at your resort.

Day 13. Northern Territory, Nitmiluk National Park

Cross the border into the Northern Territory on the way to Nitmiluk National Park. This evening, enjoy canapés and drinks on arrival at the beautiful Cicada Lodge, before indulging in a superb dinner showcasing the region’s finest produce, guaranteed to be a highlight of your holiday.

Day 14. Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise, Kakadu National Park, Yellow Water Billabong

After breakfast, step aboard the unforgettable Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise. Discover the music, stories and ways of the local Jawoyn people. Head to Kakadu and marvel at its flora, wildlife and beautiful scenery in Australia’s largest national park. Enjoy a cruise on Yellow Water Billabong, see spectacular landscapes and rich wildlife, then journey to Nourlangie Rock within Kakadu and view the unique Indigenous rock art. Tonight, enjoy dinner as you take in the beautiful surrounds of Hawk Dreaming Wilderness Lodge.

Day 15. Arnhem Land, Hawk Dreaming, Cannon Hill

Accompanied by a local guide, cross the East Alligator River into the magical and spiritual Arnhem Land. Experience the ancient art and natural beauty of a region that is normally inaccessible to most guests. This afternoon, return to Kakadu and enjoy the art and billabongs of Cannon Hill and Hawk Dreaming. (Arnhem Land may be inaccessible for cultural reasons or when tides prevent the crossing of the East Alligator River).

Day 16. Ubirr Rock Art, Darwin

Today visit the sacred site of Ubirr and explore its galleries of ancient Indigenous rock art. The magnificent rock faces have been continuously painted and repainted since 40,000BC, with most created approximately 2,000 years ago. Later, travel to Darwin and indulge in a Farewell Dinner with fellow guests and newly made friends.

Day 17. Depart Darwin

Your Kimberley, Kakadu and Arnhem Land wilderness adventure comes to an end today. After breakfast, transfer to Darwin airport for your onward flight home.
