Accommodation Overview

Broome and The Kimberley Regions

Introducing Broome

Broome was originally founded in the late 1880’s as a pearling port. Lured by the promise to make their fortune, Broome welcomed a diverse range of peoples including Malay, Chinese, Japanese, Koepanger and European. All these cultures, together with the local indigenous people, have combined to create a diverse and exotic town that today boasts a population of around 15,000.

Broome has a colourful history dominated by the pearling trade. However, the riches from the pearl beds did not come cheap and the town’s Japanese cemetery is the resting place of many divers who lost their lives working in the industry. Broome was also attacked by Japanese aircraft in March 1942 resulting in 88 deaths. Shaped by a turbulent history, Broome is now a mix of the old and the new. Chinatown’s historical buildings and the beautiful Kimberley architecture mix to create a vibrant modern town. The diversity has also created a fantastic blend of wonderful local style cuisine and unique characters.

Cable Beach is situated 6kms from Broome Township. The township itself provides many of shopping options, together with many art galleries and pearl showrooms. Broome’s famous Cable Beach is a 22km stretch of pure white sand, turquoise water, set against spectacular Indian Ocean sunsets. Cable Beach with its gentle rolling waves is perfect for swimming, sunbathing and sunsets.

If you are wishing to have a beach holiday in Broome, then a 5 to 7 night stay at Cable Beach is a perfect duration. Broome also offers many other attractions. Visit Gantheaume Point to see dinosaur footprints reputed to be 130 million years old, take in a movie at the longest running outdoor cinema in the world — Sun Pictures — or visit the pearl stores in Chinatown.

Staircase to the Moon markets are held on many of the Staircase to the Moon dates at Town Beach. The Broome Courthouse Market is also held on each Saturday morning and Sunday mornings between April and October.

When travelling beyond Broome to do a self-drive holiday on the Gibb River Road, the potential first overnight can be in Derby staying at the Spinifex Hotel. Gibb River Road

The Gibb River Road, one of Australia’s true outback 4WD experiences, extends from Derby to Kununurra. The road opens at the end of the wet season, usually late April, and can normally be driven on until late September. The Gibb River Road is unsealed from just beyond Derby until 60km outside Kununurra. The 712km of 4WD terrain takes in stunning gorges, vast cattle stations and rugged panoramic ranges. We would recommend a minimum of 6 nights to truly get the best out of your trip.

The Gibb River Road is graded at the start of the season and is mainly rocky earth. It is only suitable for large 4WD vehicles and not recommended for towing caravans, trailers and boats. The road can become very corrugated as the touring season continues. As a guide the average travelling speed is 60 to 80km per hour. We would recommend anyone with a back condition to be conscious of how jarring the road can be.

There are 2 main self-drive options on offer when doing the Gibb River Road. The first is to drive the loop from Broome up to Kununurra and then return to Broome the sealed road via Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing and take in the Bungle Bungles (most people choose to do this). There are two accommodation choices: the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge and Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge. The other option is to drive up the Gibb River Road to Kununurra then continue to Darwin via Katherine and Kakadu.

The accommodation in the East Kimberley is either Mt Hart Wilderness Lodge or Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge. Mt Elizabeth Station is pretty much halfway between Derby and Kununurra so this offers at least one night’s layover. Drysdale River Station, which is part way up the Kalumburu Road to the Mitchell Falls is the furthest you can take the hired 4WD vehicles up towards the Mitchell Plateau. Travellers will often drive as far as Drysdale and then take a scenic flight up to the majestic Mitchell Falls.

The West Kimberley has El Questro Wilderness Park where the options are either Emma Gorge, The Station or the Homestead.

Kununurra

Kununurra, the hub of the East Kimberley, was originally built in the early 1960’s to serve the Ord River irrigation project. It has now become a vibrant town of approximately 7,000 people and it is the perfect base for visiting such icons as Lake Argyle, the Ord River, El Questro Wilderness Park and the unique Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park.

Accommodation in Kununurra varies from apartment style at Freshwater East Kimberley Apartments and hotel rooms at Kununurra Country Club Resort, Kimberley Grande, Kimberley Croc Motel and Hotel Kununurra.

Kimberley Coast and East Kimberley

The Northern part of the Kimberley Coast offers some truly unique and memorable lodges. Choose from Kimberley Coastal Camp, Faraway Bay and Berkeley River Lodge. On the Northern Territory side of the Kimberley is the working cattle station Bullo River Station.
